Domain Name Registration.

What is it?

If you want a web site to show on the Internet, you need either :-

an ISP that will give you (or sell) some web space. This is known as a sub-domain and can lead to poorer search engine results than what is called a TLD (top level domain) such as the more familiar '.coms'.

or :-

a reliable web host (such as One Step Ahead!) and a domain name. Your domain name enables you to 'point' your web files to that address, so that when someone types in www.yourdomainname.com to their web browser, your web site shows on the world wide web!

Choice of domain name can be extremely critical: search engines such as Google will rank your site higher if the search term (or string) used by the visitor is contained within the domain name itself. In plain English, this means that if Mr. Jones is searching for 'widgets' on Google, and your web site (domain) name is www.buymorewidgets.com - the chances are that your site would rank higher in a Google search than other sites (similarly optimised) where their domain names do not contain the word 'widgets'.

Another important reason for choosing your domain name carefully is branding: if your established business is called 'Joe Bloggs Farm Machinery', surely you would want to continue that branding through to your domain name? Maybe www.joebloggs.com/ co.uk/ .net/ .biz are not available but why not think about www.joe-bloggs-farm-machinery.co.uk/ .net etc? Then, you score twice over : your customer is already familiar with your name and the domain name (URL) contains all the words that your customer is likely to search on!
